How so very true. I mentioned a while back on Trangam's blog that I used to watch the news. I was almost a news junkie then went for one year with no television, no radio and no newspaper. Not as a test, I just didn't want to pay the bills and we used the internet to get our movies and such. What happened?
Well I turned the satellite back on after a very long time without it and turned on Fox news to see what I had missed. Just 2 days ago they had a breaking story! What was it? Terry Schaivo the untold story. I am angry and change the channel to MSNBC they too had a breaking story. The runaway bride, is she married yet?
This is the news?
I missed the news for so long only to find out that it did nothing for me. The time the television was off? Well I spent alot more time with the kids 3 out of 4 are now on the honor roll. We have a huge lot of great summer photos. I was able to start doing a blog. I got alot more of the household chores done, making the wife much happier. So what did I lose out on? Nothing.
I am sure the pope dying was covered for several days erradicating all the lost lives due to negligence, drunk driving, gun accidents, starvation, gang violence, drug dealers, abuse and tragic fires. Somehow these are never covered, the real people are never covered. We still have a daily count on soldiers lost in Iraq, but nobody will do will a story on how many women were raped the night before. Someone is making the call as to what is the news, but it sadly has not been the public for well into 50 years now. The news media is all about fear. They try to put fear into the heads of millions, but for those millions who have not gone a year without it, it seems to work.
My big breaking story?
Well try it and see, go a year without news and you will see that you really do not miss out on anything at all except your time when you watch it. Life goes on, and when you start watching the news again you will see how they try to create fear, drama and issues out of nothing at all. They do all this while not actually covering any real news, they take their agenda and their recipe for fear and try to twist that into what we used to know as news. Sounds cynical, and sounds crazy right? Try it you will see I am right.

You are quite right. I know it first hand how it happens and now in India where the channel wars are getting big, they also play background music for news to make it more dramatic! Like news itself was not enough. There is no cause taken forward. Its mere events rotated. A bigger fear gives way to smaller fears and thats how they move...

Yes exactly! I should have been more clear...Those two breaking stories about Terry Schaivo and the runaway bride were stories from months back, rotated back into the news like it was a new issue.
Yes they add dramatic music to the news in the USA too, it feels like we are watching a suspense movie many times just to get our weather. But it is always the same old thing just rotated every hour and the following day it will be the very same stories with much more speculation rather than new events.

Ya ... and why is it we hear of the bad guys got a beatin in prison but no one will let us know how many terror plots were foiled by our marines or that life in that world is better kids in school women walking and shoping in the streets for there familys people getin back to work no you only hear what politics will tell the poor basterds who want to belive something... screw it! Im with you spend it with your kids its the right thing to do .....dad
